Shelter is another basic necessity for survival. You can find shelter in a cave, dig a snow cave, build a debris shelter, or bring along a tent. In any case, the goal is to stay dry and warm.
Here is a good short video on building a debris shelter. You can find many others with lots of variation.
We will build a variation of this shelter using a tree to support the high end of the ridge pole as shown in these photos. This shelter has two layers of debris and a partial layer of birch bark for waterproofing. When finished it would have a complete layer of bark and then one more layer of debris. It would be better if the ribbing did not stick up above the debris. These ribs can act as channels for water to leak in.
We will also learn to make a shelter out of a 10’x10′ plastic tarp.
